Law and policymakers are absolutely wild with their justifications for letting big tech run rampant. My favorite (read: least favorite) trend is saying "well people can do it so algorithms can too." What? The scale of problematic that an algorithm is capable of is off the charts. Yes, people can do bad things that we shouldn't legislate (e.g. lying) but we CAN control and enforce moral responsibility on algorithmic decision making. Algorithms and AI should be held to higher standards than humans, if for no other reason than the scope of their consequences is simply giagantic in comparison to human impacts.
