I’ve often wondered where “Step on a crack, break your mother’s back” came from. There are many theories on this but one of them dates back to the early 19th century when it was thought that evil spirits lived in cracks in the ceiling, walls and floors, and by stepping on these crevices one would invite a whole lot of trouble.
