The Fall of Icarus (by Jacob Peter Gowy) Two-Tone Coffee Mug
This design features a painting by Jacob Peter Gowy (or Gouwy), who was a Flemish Baroque painter of history paintings and portraits. In Greek mythology, Icarus was the son of Daedalus, who created the Labyrinth on the island of Crete. When Icarus and Daedalus attempted to flee from Crete, using wings that the father had created from feathers bound to their body with wax. Icarus, however, flew too close to sun, causing the wax to melt and the man to fall down into the sea. His fall is commonly interpreted as a tragic symbol of hubris and overconfidence.
