Tiny 3-toed sloth near extinction, need activists - postcard This gentle arboreal creature inhabits only one small jungle island off the coast of Panama. The government has declared the island a sanctuary, but does not enforce it. A few people live on the island in huts. Illegal logging and tourism are threats, as is capture and sale of the sloth as pets. Thankfully, the sloth is not tasty to eat, thus not hunted for food. The tiny sloth lives in a 4 sq km swampy red mangrove forest, and eats almost exclusively the leaves of that tree. Adults grow to about 20 inches long, excluding legs and tail, and top weight is about 7 and a half pounds. Sloths are low energy, slow movers, and find a natural defense against predators via the effective camouflage effect of dark greenish algae that grows on their outer fur. Their bodies also have a remarkable ability to heal wounds.
