The painting was commissioned by Piero Soderini, a statesman of the Republic of Florence. It was intended to be a fresco painted on a wall of the Salone dei Cinquecento in Palazzo Vecchio but Michelangelo never completed the battle of Cascina, though several of the preparatory drawings survive.
