Hannya (般若の面) giant coffee mug
Hannya (般若の面) is used in many Japanese plays of theaters but also kyogen, as well as in Shinto ritual dances of Kagura. The mask depicts the soul of a woman who has become a demon because of obsession or jealousy. The spirit of a woman, abandoned by her lover for another or deceived by him, comes in this form for revenge to her rival. Among the performances in which the mask is found, the most famous are “Aoi-no-Ue” (上) and “Dojoji” (道 成 寺); Hannya’s eye-catching and frightening appearance makes her one of the most recognizable masks of the Noh theater.
Hannya comes in different colors: a white mask indicates a woman of an aristocratic position.
