Einstein's Field Equation Mug
Einstein formulated his Field Equation in 1915 as part of the groundbreaking general theory of relativity. The theory revolutionized how we understood gravity by describing it as a warping of the fabric of space & time. The right-hand side of this equation describes the energy contents of our universe (including the 'dark energy' that propels the current cosmic acceleration). The left-hand side describes the geometry of space-time. The equality reflects the fact that in Einstein's general relativity, mass and energy determine the geometry or curvature, which give rise to what we call gravity. A very elegant equation, that reveals the relationship between space-time, matter & energy. This equation tells us how the sun warps space-time so the Earth moves around it and also tells how the universe evolved since the Big Bang. It also predicted the existence of black holes.
